Honoring God’s Ten Commandments is not an option for Christians. How do we know? Jesus said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (Matthew 5:17, NIV). In other words, Jesus came to fill the Ten Commandments and the Bible’s prophecies “full of meaning.”
In ancient times, commandment-keeping had become a burden. But Jesus came to remind people that this wasn’t the way it was supposed to be: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
But does Jesus expect His people to keep all the Ten Commandments in today’s society? “I tell you the truth,” He said, “until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished” (verse 18). He goes on to tell of harsh consequences for those who don’t pay attention to His law: “Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches other to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven” (verse19). Happily, though, “Whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven” (verse 19).
A look at today’s headlines makes it easy to see how disregarding God’s Ten Commandments brings tragedy and strife.
If you wish to serve Jesus, you will want to keep God’s law: “This is love for God: to obey His commands” (1 John 5:3). This includes God’s Ten Commandments found in Exodus 20:3-17.
